Library Group - Programme

Friday 7th May 2010 Administration only - No Formal Meeting

Friday 14th May 2010
John Stewart

We shall celebrate the publication of John Stewart's new political novel 'Prime Minister'. In addition to signing copies of his book John is charged with reflecting upon what he has learned from the novel writing process as his characters have struggled to address the economic crises of the day on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

Friday 21st May 2010
David Triggs - The Wisdom of Henry George

In this talk (postponed from last term) David will explore and illustrate how there is so much more to Henry George's ideas than a 'single tax' and 'free trade'. In coming to these conclusions George took account of the perennial wisdom that has permeated civilised life through the ages. His analysis and prescriptions allowed for the physical, mental, and spiritual nature of individuals and a healthy society.

Friday 28th May 2010
Peter Watson

Peter will explore George Cooper's book 'The Origin of Financial Crises: Central banks, credit bubbles, and the efficient market fallacy'. With his success in establishing and running businesses in one the most competitive of markets (Hollywood film making) together with his long time interest in economic matters Peter has a wealth of useful experience to draw upon.

Friday 4th June 2010
Dr Johannes Lindvall

We are pleased to welcome Dr. Lindvall from the Department of Politics and International Relations, Oxford University for what is likely to be a stimulating talk and discussion. Entitled 'Reform Capacity' Dr Lindvall will discuss what political science has to say about the effects of political institutions on the likelihood that democratic governments will be able to adopt significant policy changes, relative to the status quo.

Friday 11th June 2010
John Story - Managing Financial Assets

We are grateful to John for agreeing to speak to us about this important feature of the economy. As a professional charged with managing financial assets for a living John is in a position to provide a valuable insight into the challenges that confront those who seek to optimise the benefits associated with the control of financial assets.

Friday 18th June 2010 Administration only - No Formal Meeting

Friday 25th June 2010
Dr Joseph Milne - Henry George: The Ascent to the Good through Justice

If this talk is as challenging and stimulating as Joseph's earlier talks to the group, based upon his studies into ancient and medieval conceptions of Natural Law and the inclination of all creatures towards the good that causes them to be, this talk promises to be another treat.

Friday 2nd July 2010
Rosemary Attack - Voice of Freedom

Rosemary Attack is likely to provide economic stimulation of a rather special kind as she shares with us a 'Voice of Freedom' based upon the life and work of 'pastoral poet' and observer of nineteenth century land enclosures, John Clare.

Friday 9th July 2010
Jonathan Nichols - Lessons We Should Learn From The Anglo Saxons

Jonathan will share his enthusiasm and respect for the Anglo Saxons when he explores what we should learn from them about government, land, and economic justice.
